N.C. Mutual executive R. Kelly Bryant, Jr., tosses lollipops, and Santa Claus (William McBroom) receives onlookers’ cheers during a “Black Christmas” parade, November 29, 1968.

Sponsored by the Black Solidarity Committee for Community Improvement as part of its boycott of certain White-owned businesses that would not hire Black people, and still held to Jim Crow laws.

The parade was held on Fayetteville Street at the same time as the Durham Merchants Association’s traditional parade downtown.

The motto was “don’t spend where you can’t work “.
