Hillside Park High School

The original Hillside Park High School was built in 1922 on the northern edge of land donated by John Sprunt Hill for Hillside Park.
Hillside Park High School was the first high school for African-Americans in Durham; prior to 1922, the Whitted, East End, and West End Graded Schools were the only educational facilities for African Americans - these schools only taught up to 8th grade.
Even then, Hillside did not have a 12th grade until 1937, and the 12th grade offered solely vocational training until the 1940s.
