September 27, 1956 - The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visits Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), delivering a talk on “The Montgomery Story” in the Memorial Chapel.

It was one of Dr. King’s first visits to Virginia.
His oration described the beginnings of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and ongoing resistance of Montgomery’s Black community to racial injustice.

The speech received a standing ovation from the audience.

Dr. King made several visits to Hampton during his career.

His mother, Alberta Williams King, graduated from Hampton in the Class of 1924.

Dr. King is honored with a statue in Hampton University’s Legacy Park and in the naming of Martin Luther King, Jr. Hall.
