In 1879, Hampton’s founder, General Armstrong, wrote,
“the Negro has the only American Music, I feel it a duty to preserve.”
Within five years of the Hampton Normal Agricultural Institute's (now Hampton University's) founding, Armstrong had created The Hampton singers.
The Hampton Singers toured the United States and Europe raising money for school. While on a world tour in 1890, the singers performed a series of concerts in South Africa introducing spirituals and work songs to people of that nation.
