Chief Hiram A. Bennett

Chief Hiram A. Bennett (1922-1973) was a descendant of Washington and Jenny Harvey Bennett, both formerly enslaved at Somerset plantation . He served in the US Navy from 1942 until his death and inscribed this 1943 photo, "To my family with best wishes."

Somerset plantation in Creswell, North Carolina was an active plantation for 80 years (1785-1865), By 1865, Somerset Place was one of the upper South's largest plantations.
