Photograph of two Chatham County, NC. farm workers in 1939 who worked on Mr. Gordon Bennett’s farm on what is now Polks Landing Rd running west from US 15-501.

Photographer: Dorothea Lange was commissioned by the federal government in the late 1930s to travel around the country and take pictures of people.

In the summer of 1939 she left Chapel Hill, NC in the company of a UNC social worker and traveled down 15-501 to Pittsboro. This photograph is labeled ‘Highway 15, about two miles south of Orange County’ .
