Fred and Hyla Cundiff

Fred and Hyla Cundiff were born and grew up together in Wilkes County, N.C.
In their professional careers each made significant contributions to the education of African American students, both in Wilkesboro and Greensboro.
Fred Cundiff came to Greensboro to teach in 1954. He became the first African American Assistant School Superintendent in 1969, playing a crucial role in the relatively peaceful integration of Greensboro’s school system in the early 1970s.
Hyla Cundiff was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, primarily at the Washington Street, Bluford, and Vandalia Elementary schools. Her thirteen years of volunteer work with the American Cancer Society brought her the distinct honor of the prestigious “2 Those Who Care” award in 1989 .
