On December 20, 1962, Rev. Dr. King spoke to a massive crowd at the National Guard Armory on North Broad Street.

During his visit, Rev. Dr. King also met with Reverend Frederick LaGarde of the Providence Baptist Church, as well as other members of the Edenton Movement, a coalition of local Civil Rights groups.

The Edenton Movement would later realize many victories in the fight for equality, including the de-segregation of the Courthouse, Library, and local theater.

He also met with local activist Golden Asro Frinks, who would later become a leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

In addition to his work with the Edenton Movement, Mr. Frinks participated in the Civil Rights Movement statewide, and even represented Rev. Dr. King and the SCLC during the Williamston Movement.

Frinks also became one of the organizers for the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

The Freedom House of Golden and Ruth Frinks still stands in downtown Edenton and is currently being restored by the State and a grant from the National Parks Service.
