HOW HISTORY WAS MADE
“A LESSON IN PERSEVERANCE”
Encapsulated in a era that extends over five decades, the Negro National Baseball Leagues persevered playing their own brand of baseball against all obstacles and hardships that they encountered.
But then, there was the music, the dance – to refresh, to console, to inspire, and to heal.
Walter “ Buck” Leonard of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and hundreds of other African Americans were determined to play the game that they loved, with the level of skill and passion, as was displayed among their white counterparts in the Baseball Major Leagues.
Buck Leonard and Josh Gibson, known as the “Thunder Twins”, were compared to Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth respectively. All four achieved the highest distinction – induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York.
